Bongo  Camping southern Tanzania

Bongo Camping, located near the Malawi-Tanzania border, is a community-based campsite in the village of Tukuyu that offers a great opportunity to experience the warm and welcoming nature of Tanzanians. The campsite was founded by Michael, a lifelong resident of Tukuyu with a cheerful disposition. By spending time at Bongo Camping, you can immerse yourself in the local culture, practice your KiSwahili, and contribute to the local economy. All the proceeds from camping at Bongo Camping are invested back into the community, such as supporting local women's livelihoods and providing education to children in the village. Tukuyu itself is nestled in the heart of lush green banana plantations and breathtaking tea fields, and Bongo Camping provides a wide range of activities to explore the beautiful surroundings.

What can you do at Bongo Camping?

The campsite is situated in a beautiful green area surrounded by stunning natural attractions. Michael is well-versed with all the nearby places worth visiting and can arrange for a guide to take you there, either by car or by hiking. Here's a quick overview of the places you can explore:

  • God's bridge
  • Malasusa waterfall
  • Mt Rungwe: Hike the third-highest mountain of Tanzania with a height of XXXm.
  • Crater Lake Ngosi
  • Tea fields visit
  • Masoko crater
  • Kaporogwe falls

What facilities are there at Bongo camping?

The camping area is a grassy field located next to the church in the village. It is surprisingly quiet during the night, so you can safely pitch your tent or park your car/truck here. There is a security guard around during the night to ensure safety. The ablutions are very simple and include a long-drop toilet and a hot water bucket shower. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available and will be prepared by local women from the village, enabling them to benefit from the community campsite. We highly recommend this place!

How is it supporting the community?

Staying at Bongo Campsite is a great way to support the local community of Tukuyu. The camping fees are invested in educational classes for the village children. Additionally, by ordering breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner, you directly provide an income for local women who will prepare the meal for you and bring it to the campsite. The owner, Michael, is ambitious and aims to develop and grow the campsite, which will create more job opportunities for the local youths. By choosing to stay at Bongo Camping, you contribute to the betterment of the community while traveling in Tanzania.

How to get to Bongo Campsite

When heading to the campsite, it is important to contact Michael beforehand via call or WhatsApp at +255757008418. Keep in mind that Michael doesn't stay at the campsite, but in Tukuyu, so he will need to travel to the campsite to welcome you. To find the campsite, take the turn-off a few kilometers from Tukuyu town, which is sign-posted at the start of the dirt road. The road may be a bit rough, but it is manageable with a 2WD vehicle if driven slowly.
